Weight Changes

Weight Changes is a new initiative to help people achieve their weight loss goals.

In line with Welsh Government, Central Government and NHS advice, I am running a Weight Changes clinic to help boost motivation around weight goals. I am trained in psychology and counselling and have over 25 years experience of supporting people through the change process using the Motivational Interviewing approach. The NHS obesity program recommends Motivational Interviewing as the effective approach for weight loss support. I believe in people's capacity to change their weight and as a result their health. I know that we all have mixed feelings about making changes and keeping those changes going. My therapeutic experience has taught me that change is more manageable when someone is tuning in to us, understanding our experiences and challenges, and drawing out what works for us, our choices and motivation.

Weight Changes pathways are completely flexible and tailored to your needs and include 3 stages:

  • Stage 1 - Measurements including BMI and waist, background experience of weight change and current goals are explored. BMI related risks are outlined and relevant local groups and services information provided.
  • Stage 2 - Tailor made pathway to change, the focus and number of sessions will be chosen collaboratively and will work with the individual's strengths and aspirations.
  • Stage 3 - Results and future focus.

At the time of the pandemic, weight and health choices are receiving a higher profile. During these times, the sessions can be socially distanced face to face, or virtual on Teams or Zoom.

My Journey

Everybody's experience of weight change is different. I have made changes to my weight throughout my adult life and like many other people, this has been an emotional rollercoaster. I have had mixed results with many approaches including, Slimming World, Weightwatchers, Lighter Life, The 5:2 Diet, Detox Programs, Beverly Hills Diet, and Rosemary Conley.

Through this process, I have gained a wealth of knowledge of the choices that are available for people who want to change their weight. I am also keenly aware of the struggles involved in starting programs, maintaining them and returning to them after relapse.

The key thing that I have learnt is change can happen, and can be sustained when we have chance to look at our own choices, make our own decisions and find support through this process.
